Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

Yes, exactly, I am trying to use fdm printing at its limits. That is where its greatest advantages are. Its most powerful asset, especially in contrast to subtractive fabrication methods, is in that it slices a solid object into perimeters and builds them almost out of thin air. If we could just rou...

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

ok, new problem: why, if I set a process to print only solid top layer (1) and solid bottom layer (1), with no perimeter (Outline/perimeter shells 0), does it print most but not all of the layers solid, but if it also has 1 perimeter on, it doesn't? I was trying to force printing bottoms and tops be...

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

But when you print it with bottom layer off, does it still add the paths between the perimeters where the mesh slopes enough that the perimeters no longer stack on top of each other? It doesn't for me, and I understand those areas to be considered the bottom.Compare the bottom of the curved form whe...

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

I don't want to have to shell them. With a complex model it adds hours of work, and it involves a lot of trial and error, and doesn't always slice in a predictable fashion. My test parts were very simple, but shelling complex meshes always introduces bad geometry that has to be painstakingly sorted ...

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

In the preview mode, is there a way to show the gcode that is being simulated as it is simulated?

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

I think I'm going to investigate just going into the g-code and manually deleting the extra movements. I would think the largest sections in the first and last layers would be grouped as one path, especially if I am using retraction at the end of each path. Or just delete the first and last layers e...

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

Yeah. It was a very good idea, I thought it would work, but it seems to default to solid on the first layer of the process

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

I have tried that. But as soon as a process with bottom solid layer (1) is started, whatever layer that may be, it prints the first layer of that process as solid, filling in the entire cross section as solid. the attached file has 4 test parts. One closed mesh, one open mesh, and two hollow shelled...

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

Let me explain it this way. I have a figure sculpture that is too tall to print in one part. I want to print it as a hollow shell using an absolute minimum of material as fast as possible. So I print it as a single perimeter. I don't mind some imperfections, but need a reasonably continuous surface,...

Re: bottom solid layers on, but not for first layer?

It would seem that any process that has bottom solid layers checked on will put in a solid bottom at the first layer it starts, regardless of where it is in the model. I don't think that'll solve my problem, unless I'm missing something.
