For significant overhangs, I keep the layer height below 50% of the extrusion width. With PLA I would definitely have the fans running full bore on overhangs.

In my experience, a large (0.6+ mm) nozzle often allows larger layer height, but the speed need to be slowed down. The net result is often lower resolution and almost the same print time.
