I thought that this is basic level functionality in 3d printing software 
Printing top layer in 0 or 90 degrees just looks much better in lot of 3d prints so why not implemented? "locked to the global coordinates" can not be any excuse..

I'm in same boat too...Purchased Simplify3d and first print was generally ok'ish but missed thin details that free Makerbot software printed 
There really should be setting to allowing that, even if it would not be absolutely correct.. well I have 2 weeks to think if this is a deal breaker..
