The problem is the nozzle above the heater needs to be removed because you most likely have a small ball of material which will not allow new filament to be pushed through. Need to remove this and clean it out. You may be able to remove it with a pair of p needle nose pliers. One way to prevent this...

Have you just inserted the M600 command at the layer you want ? example from Marlin page on Gcode. M600 X10 Y15 Z5 ; Do filament change at X:10, Y:15 and Z:+5 from current
