Extruder Path To Avoid Crossing Infil Or Body Of Part

Not sure what you would call this!
A setting to make the extruder follow outer perimeters of a model so as to avoid travel moves crossing the body/infill of a print.

The idea would be to help avoid collision between the nozzle and internal parts of the model such as smaller pillars the nozzle could knock over.
This can be relevant when some areas or edges of inner areas of a print may curl a tiny bit and are more prone to nozzle strikes.

Similar results as Z-Hop on retraction but some printers don't handle Z-Hop that well.

It would increase print times but maybe would be something that is selectable by layer such as temps or fan control.
Also maybe a setting to make it do this only for travel moves over a specified distance.

I agree some printers don't handle z-hop well or are slow at moving the z axis. Cura has “avoid printed parts” which is similar to what you're requesting. I think if implemented better than Cura, with optimized paths and rounded turns, it could be an outstanding feature. Possibly adding the ability to only activate on top layer or throughout the whole print would be nice. In some cases, this feature could save time since z-hops can be lengthy.

Great ideas guys! I feel like a good name could be "Avoid Crossing Interior". I've documented this feature request for our developement team. I'll continue to monitor this thread for gauging user opinions.

Thanks again!

Did this get added to Version 5?

On the advanced tab. "modify travel moves to avoid open spaces". This is essentially what you are talking about I think.
Been around for a while.

In version 4.

It says: Avoid crossing outline for travel movements

This says it's trying to avoid traveling across the part outline.

I'm not really caring about the outline, I'm worried about the interior surface.

In version 5

It says - Modify Travel Movement to AVOID open spaces.

With that logic, if it is checked, it will try to stay inside the part and avoid open spaces.

Therefore, if I leave it unchecked, it should then always go to open spaces, and avoid the part and infill.
