Ooze shield: Auto-off if only one extruder for rest of print

Wed May 24, 2017 9:17 pm

I'm printing with PVA (support) + PLA (object). After a certain layer, there's no more support being printed. However, the ooze shield continues to be printed - wasting filament and time.

At the point where one extruder won't be used for the remainder of the print, I'd like an option to automatically disable the ooze shield printing for the remainder of the print. There should already be sufficient ooze shield to mop up the last bit of dribble from the extruder that's no longer being used. This would save a lot of filament and time.

I've since realised I can switch to a different profile without ooze shield when the print reaches a certain layer. However I find this approach to be somewhat cumbersome so ideally would still like a simple checkbox option in the profile (ie. use only one profile and it works out automatically what layer to stop printing ooze shield).

When I print dual extrusion, even once the second color is no longer used, I still print the ooze shield because otherwise I get a lot of oozing on the part. So personally, I would not want it to stop right away. Maybe after another 50-100 layers I might be able to turn it off, but in most cases I get a better print if I leave it on.

In version 4.0, you can customize the exact height where the ooze shield stops printing, so if the end of your print only uses a single extruder, you can turn off the ooze shield for that section. To do this, you can use the new Variable Settings Wizard. Go to Tools > Variable Settings Wizard, and enter the height where you want to stop the ooze shield. You can also move slider at the bottom of that window if you want to see this location on the model itself. Once you know the correct location, click "Add Location" and the you can finish the wizard by clicking "Split Process". You will now have 2 processes, one for the bottom of your printer where you want the ooze shield enabled, and another for the top of the print. Double-click on the top process and disable the ooze shield for that process (on the Additions tab).

We found that even after the second extruder was no longer used, you may still want to keep printing the ooze shield for another 10-20 layers to catch any remaining ooze, so this way you can customize the exact location where the ooze shield stops to make sure the shield protects the part until the second extruder is done oozing.

New Version 4.1 does not have Ooze Shield "Auto" switch. I want to print Ooze Shield with both extruders from bottom to top, how can I achieve that?
