Guide for E3D V6 + CR-10S Settings?

Wed Oct 24, 2018 1:06 pm

Hi All,

A couple months ago I installed a new E3D V6 on my CR-10S. It was quite easy to do but I'm having issues.

I printed out the CR-10 Heavy Duty customisable modular e3D V6 mount Volcano 5015 ABL (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2494642) before hand. At first, with 2 side fans running at 100%, I would get thermal runaway. Once I got that figured out I lowered my fan speeds in S3D to 25%.

That seemed to work for smaller jobs but then I did an overnighter... I woke up to find a half printed bottom and a stringy top. Does anyone have some settings to recommend with the E3D V6 and a CR-10? I'm willing to print out a different mount if that will help!

Thanks,
fat

I have a Volcano nozzle and a CR-10 myself (a HICTOP printer), but I haven't tried it yet. I was just checking for other people's settings as I just got Simplify3D.

I was shocked to find out S3D doesn't have a standard setting for PETG, but even after fiddiling with only a few things I'm getting better prints.

I haven't had the guts to try the Volcano yet though!

Did you change anything yet in the profile? Up the print speed?

Hi

I"m using a V6 on my CR-10. I'm using the dual extruder setup on Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2777673), but only have the stock control board right now, so I haven't actually gotten the second extruder running.

Anyway, thought I'd tag on and see if you got any further. I haven't tried my Volcano yet, but I'm about to do some large prints and thought I'd check to see how you did.

Hey John,

It's been a while since we both posted about this. I just got my printer working again, after a year+ of it just sitting there...

How has the V6 been working for you? Any tips? How is the dual extruder? I've wanted a dual setup since I first got my printer.

I’ve used several different brands of E3D V6 and settled in on two brands for my two Hictop printers.

#2 uses All Metal (no PTFE tube). Perfect for High temp plastics such as PETG and ABS. No clogging and No melted PTFE tube.

#1 uses PTFE tube (kit has changeable Metal or PTFE) for PLA printing.

I dialed-in the best process for the stuff I print (engineering stuff, as opposed to statues, trinkets...

I built these Hictop’s from Kits 5 yrs ago and made a video for upgrading these printers to E3D_V6 along with adding a Metal Arm and Glass to bed - Here's the Link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XNcJbNzPdY, if interested.
They work so well that I gave away my DaVinci printer.

Attached are xxx.fff profiles for them. Frankly, I’ve never imported them so I don't know what they contain for the settings - I fricken hate the way s3d files are named, used and...etc. Naturally, they represent my printer dimensions...etc...

Awesome stuff John! I use a Capricorn PTFE Bowden Tube so I'll look at the appropriate fff settings. I fully understand that they may be completely incompatible with my system.

I'll definitely check our your build video!

Although most of my stuff would be considered "trinkets" I guess, I do have some engineering items that I want to try out. My biggest issue is that we have a 13 month old daughter and we're worried about fumes from Nylon and some of the other higher end filaments... Any thoughts on that?

PLA is made from Corn and (specific Brands, if submitted for approval) are approved by FDA for medical implants and Food-Safe use.
That crunchy-sounding water bottle you're drinking from is made of PLA.

PETG does off-gas and best to open a window. I don't open window in winter and I'm still breathing.

I'm not "John".

Actually, water bottles are made out of PETG, not PLA.

PETG doesn't smell at all when you print it. I've just made hundreds of COVID-19 face shields out of it.

ABS is what outgasses, although I inadvertently printed some and it didn't smell as bad as the adhesive on the PEI sheet on the Monoprice MP10 did. Actually, it didn't smell at all, but it does have that reputation.

I'm the John in the thread.

Greybeard, those look like some nice printer upgrades! My HICTOP was a CR-10 clone, oddly we seem to have different base printers. I eventually did convert mine to a "prusa" clone, called the CREARIBO. That was a rewarding upgrade, but not easy.

@fatboy1271:

So, I did get the dual extruder working more or less with the holder that was mentioned earlier in the thread, but even with it's great way to adjust the nozzle height, it was a colossal PITA. The two nozzles have to be very precisely tuned as far as separation and I also had to compile firmware to do that. I'm now pretty good with Marlin firmware, but it was a long road. I also burned out my original Melzi board by inadvertently unplugging a stepper while power was to it, so I had to upgrade boards. I eventually used a BIGTREETECH SKR PRO which is a great board, but required a then-development branch of Marlin to properly use the SD card to store settings. Was a long road!

The V6 extruder is fine - lots of compatible blocks and all.

Your are correct, PLA is #7 (so small and blury I can barely read/distinguish 1 and 7).

My printers are Hictop 3DP, but, I think, from looking at their other models, they use the same/common Extruder bracket (not 100% sure).
