Version 4 to 5 file ?s

if there are major changes in 5 will there actually be a file version change? So we can upgrade a file from 4 to 5 but once updated you can't open a 5 in 4. This is the case with many software systems out there. Or will the changes be so drastic version 4 will not even open in 5? Or to soon to tell?
