tiger stripes / ripples

i am printing a very large flat object,6" x 8" and on layer 2 and 3 i have some very strange ripples in the surface. its not really affecting anything but its only in the middle of the bed. the outer 1" of the part is perfectly smooth. anyone ever see this? know what the cause might be? i should note that while it was doing this i put my hand on the z axis screw to see if it was jittery and it was not. seemed really stationary with zero movement.
