Retraction issue with dual printing

Hello everybody,

this is my first post here at the S3D Forum.

Short introduction: I am a 42 year old German engineer having a Replicator 2x with some mods like the E3DV6 and Titan Extruders with bowdens. For the last 5 years (i guess) i used MakerBot Desktop. I didn’t want to spend too much time on setting up everything in detail. The results were not 100% perfect, but ok to me. Until now ;-) after installing the 2 E3DV6 and 2 bowden Titans.

8 or 9 calicats later and about 20 h of setting things up (adjustments here, adjustment there…) I get much better results with S3D now…. Using the right Tool (T0) - single Extrusion mode.

Although 98% of my print projects are single extrusions I want to have a working setup with the dual mode. So I tried to print the Traffic Cone (Dual Extrusion) by CocoNut (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:21773).

Concentrating on Toolhead offsets at the beginning I accepted the different print quality I had with single mode. Although I was wondering (did not made any change which should have an impact to printquality).

Anyway. 3 Cones later I have an acceptable alignment of the two nozzels…

Now I am stuck with some strange Extrusion behaviors.
  • I have set up a good working retraction of 6mm at 1800mm/min (30mm/s).
  • I also have a tool change retraction of 8mm at 1000mm/min (16,67mm/s) and a tool change extra restart distance of -0.3mm.
The symptoms are:
  • performed start script with normal / good results
  • first line with grey ABS with right extruder (T0)
  • second line with red ABS with the left extruder (T1).
  • during finishing start script (while lifting after second red line): oozing a small amount grey on T0 nozzle
  • Toolhead is moving to part print position starting inner circle with grey (T0).
  • just after moving to the plate it squeezes out a huge amount of grey (T0)
  • after finishing the inner circle with grey it changes to the red tool (T1) at same layer hight
  • it’s starting to print outer contour with: no extrusion about 40 to 60mm
Very unsatisfying.

As I found no suitable adjustment possibility I took a deep dive to the G-Code (never wanted to do that, but…).

Here is what I found: No retractions (no normal and no tool change retraction) are made during start script.

The Problem is:
  • after grey line (tool T0) at start script – no retraction
  • drawing red line (tool T1)
  • so the last activated tool is the red one (tool T1)
  • after ; **** end of start.gcode **** it starts with a retraction  takes effect to red (tool T1)
  • now there is a change to grey (tool T0)
  • after moving to print start position there is a revers retraction (the reason for squeezing out at start point because of the fact that tool T0 never had a rejection after last extrusion)
  • after finishing the inner circle with grey (tool T0) it changes to red (tool T1)
  • starting to print with no reverse rejection (but it had one at the very first step after start script)
So I come down to the conclusion: This cannot work!
I am hesitating to call it a bug. So let me ask you: Anything I have overlooked? Any mistake I made?

Although 98% of my print projects are single extrusions I want to have a working setup with the dual mode. So I tried to print the Traffic Cone (Dual Extrusion) by CocoNut (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:21773).

Concentrating on Toolhead offsets at the beginning I accepted the different print quality I had with single mode. Although I was wondering (did not made any change which should have an impact to printquality).

Anyway. 3 Cones later I have an acceptable alignment of the two nozzels…

Now I am stuck with some strange Extrusion behaviors.
  • I have set up a good working retraction of 6mm at 1800mm/min (30mm/s).
  • I also have a tool change retraction of 8mm at 1000mm/min (16,67mm/s) and a tool change extra restart distance of -0.3mm.
The symptoms are:
  • performed start script with normal / good results
  • first line with grey ABS with right extruder (T0)
  • second line with red ABS with the left extruder (T1).
  • during finishing start script (while lifting after second red line): oozing a small amount grey on T0 nozzle
  • Toolhead is moving to part print position starting inner circle with grey (T0).
  • just after moving to the plate it squeezes out a huge amount of grey (T0)
  • after finishing the inner circle with grey it changes to the red tool (T1) at same layer hight
  • it’s starting to print outer contour with: no extrusion about 40 to 60mm
Very unsatisfying.

As I found no suitable adjustment possibility I took a deep dive to the G-Code (never wanted to do that, but…).

Here is what I found: No retractions (no normal and no tool change retraction) are made during start script.

The Problem is:
  • after grey line (tool T0) at start script – no retraction
  • drawing red line (tool T1)
  • so the last activated tool is the red one (tool T1)
  • after ; **** end of start.gcode **** it starts with a retraction  takes effect to red (tool T1)
  • now there is a change to grey (tool T0)
  • after moving to print start position there is a revers retraction (the reason for squeezing out at start point because of the fact that tool T0 never had a rejection after last extrusion)
  • after finishing the inner circle with grey (tool T0) it changes to red (tool T1)
  • starting to print with no reverse rejection (but it had one at the very first step after start script)
So I come down to the conclusion: This cannot work!
I am hesitating to call it a bug. So let me ask you: Anything I have overlooked? Any mistake I made?

This portion is where the first extruder can be retracted:

The machine uses relative extrusions so you can simply add the following after the G92 A0 B0:

As for T1 not extruding for a while, the code you provided doesn't include the portion of the part printed with T1, so I can't tell if it's actually priming or not.

Thank's DarthRevan, for your reply and the suggested workaround code.
Had the same idea to add the retraction, but than there is no priming again (see the 4 last lines at the provided g-code - this is the first tool change - the last line is the first movement with the new tool T1).

My next thougt was to add the priming of T1 directly after the G-Code has been generated.

But...

I have a makerbot replicator 2x which doesn't use the generated G-Code directly.
It uses X3G. It is generated parallel to the G-Code file by S3D.

If i add sth. manual to the G-Code I would have to convert the G-Code manually with a third paty software.
This is not very practical, due to the fact that i change settings very often (like temps, coolings, speeds etc.).

So it seems to be a S3D bug?

The last line of your provided code is the first travel move to the beginning of what I assume is the first printing location for T1. Directly after that line is where I would expect priming to take place.

Have you tried turning on the skirt and setting it to be printed with all extruders or at least T1? This would ensure all extruders are primed/retracted the correct amount prior to being used/switched.
