How do I prime the extruder without using a skirt/brim?

I have an XYZ Da Vinci Pro 1.0. The default software xyzware pro creates a long strand of filament on the right side of the build plate before proceeding with a print. I'm trying to mimic this behavior before my prints in simplify3d. I need a good way to prime the extruder because I keep running into situations where a piece of curled filament gets caught on the tool head during the first couple of layers which ends of shifting the entire print and causing a mess.
I don't want to use a skirt because I require a brim on this print which will help the ABS stick to my heated print bed to ensure no warp or lift up. I could find no way to create a skirt and a brim in the process settings and unfortunately a simple raft does not resolve the problem.
How do I do this?
