3.01 - Strange problem: Holes are getting closed

Hello,

starting with version 3 I have a strange problem. On some .STL files Simplify3D closes holes after slicing. You can see this even in the previewing. But it closes the holes only after some layers. And the layer height has a direct effect on it so I can remove this problem if I use another layer height.
I have this problem with several STL-files for example one file created by me with FreeCAD and another file created by another person with OpenSCAD. I did not have this problem with version 2.2 and I also have no problems if I use other slicing software.

I think I've experienced this on rare occasions, but was able to get rid of it by moving the object .01 mm in the Z-axis, which is about 1/20th of a layer. Can you post factory files of this occurring though.

Rotating also might help. Okay in that file it is reduced. More extreme it is here with the attached version, if interested, but I wanted to report this as bug. Am I wrong here?
You may want to change the layer height to 0.2 or 0.24 to see the effect. (For rapid printing my supllier suggests 0.24 layer height. I did not get the reason yet).

There's a bunch of non-manifold and self-intersecting errors with your mesh. You can actually see the errors just by looking at the model in S3D, but you can also run the automated checks by going to Repair > Identify Non-Manifold Edges or Repair > Identify Self-Intersecting Surfaces.

So you will need to fix your mesh first. It needs to be a solid 3D model without these errors. Read this for more info: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3177

But I have no problem using Slic3r or Cura and at one file the .STL is generated by OpenSCAD. I have no factory file yet. How do you know, that there are so much errors? Maybe Simplify3D detects errors where no errors are.

No, they are definitely real errors with the mesh. You can see them just by looking at the file in S3D. There's missing triangles and self-intersecting surfaces. Just repair the model so that you have a valid mesh and you will be fine.

I am not able to repair any self-intersecting surfaces using Simplify3D. There is no option to do that. Besides if the error is reported by this problem it still could be a problem with the import filter of Simplify3D as Cura and Slic3r do not have any problems. To be fair FreeCAD itself produced some small errors in his file design, but I have .STL-files directly generated by OpenSCAD showing the same issue so either the OpenSCAD export filter is faulty or the Simplify3D import filter but because of the behaviour of the other two prohrams I would think this is a problem regarding Simplify3D.

well its been said already but ill add to this. the model has errors. s3d or any other slicer won't cause errors in your models. it will not alter the stl in any way. s3d is a little more sensitive to those errors then other slicers. it picks up on things that the others don't. the model needs to be right or it won't slice correctly plain and simple. because your cad software exported it doesn't mean anything. its all comes down to your workflow, how well and correct the model was built. goto the link below and upload your model. it will send it back to you repaired.

I do not mean this in a bad way. You have to understand that I am have to be skeptical as for example a downloadable model from thingivers had for example 212 errors with Slic3r 1.1.7 but only one error with version 1.2.X. I am wondering why. Cura btw no error.
It is similiar with other models created by OpenScad (by another person). How you should get errors with OpenScad?
I know that FreeCAD has many problems and my model has some FreeCAD errors as well which I cannot delete but they are not visible so they should not been exported.
I am sorry that I am very skeptical but the example of Slic3r the time before I got Simplify3D is the reason. From one version to the next there was a goot to see error reduction.
And also: Why cannot Simplify3D autorepair such errors? Even Slic3r autorepairs them (that is the message: "Auto repaired 212 errors" or similiar. Slic3r is free and seems to have a much better error handling. That makes me sad as I have paid much money for this program and Slic3r is free.

Really its not the job of any slicer to be fixing errors of poor modeling habits. The errors dont come from exporting out of any one particular cad software. The errors come from the guy making the model. Slic3r and s3d have repair tools built in as a convenience but repair tools in any software, even netfabb, can only repair so much. Slicers are there to slice your model not be a repair tool. In well over 2 years i have never needed the repair tools in s3d. Its just not what the software was designed to do. the link i gave you is the best repair tool going. Its the old netfabb cloud service.
