Printing parts with thin walls

I've been trying to print out this stupid little piece for the past two days on S3D.

No matter how I turn the many knobs, increasing infill %, adding top layers, going slow, etc., I keep getting crappy prints with ugly holes in the top layer.
Earlier today, I decided to print on the free software that comes with my printer (MatterControl). Lo and behold, it prints MUCH better than S3D - it has no huge holes in the top.

Needless to say, I'm fairly miffed. I should be getting much better quality for the price I paid. What the heck is going wrong? I'm going to need a fix on this soon, because right now I'm not sure I would recommend S3D to anyone else.

You just need to adjust your thin wall settings. I'm attaching the factory file that worked fine for me on my printer.

What exactly did you change?

Yes, please tell us, what was the key to making this work?

Re: Printing parts with thin walls

The changes were:

Minimum infill length: 5mm to 2mm
Infill extrusion width: 130% to 140%
Infill overlap: 15% to 10%
Perimeters: 2 to 1

Admittedly changing the first 3 didn't make major differences, it was the perimeters that seemed to make the big change when I looked at it.

Not sure where you're seeing those changes... At least half of those don't match any of the files that were posted

Oops - "infill overlap" was meant to be "outline overlap" (and was 15% to 30%) - however the rest all match up to the profile in the .factory file that I downloaded. Though S3D is good at glitching out, the profile that it changes to when I open the download is definitely not one of my own.

Edit: Weird - you're right. I went directly between the two files when getting those numbers so I'm not sure what happened there. Though it probably must have glitched when opening one.

The changes according to the two files now (lol) were only outline overlap - 15% to 30%, minimum infill length 5mm to 2mm, and perimeters 2 to 1.

Re: Printing parts with thin walls

I am fairly certain that the perimeters change is what did the trick. This is something I deal with all the time.

Here are some snapshots showing a wall with 2 perimeters yet you can see down between them. Then the other image shows what happens when you set 1 perimeter, the infill takes over and fills it solid.
