Hello!

I have a issue with the software. It is hard to describe, but the pictures will show what I mean.

The failure in Simplify3D - one of the top layers is not going far enough over the infill - the result are gaps/holes:

The Makerware is doing a better job - the top layer has enough overlap to prevent gaps/holes:

Is it possible to adjust this "overlap" in Siplify3D? Like this:

Please attache here your factory-file. It seams that in the red marked aerea is no perimeter.
Have a look to print-preview -mode and there > coloring > Feature Type. That shows what kind of layer is printed there.

Annex:
When the grided area is the base of following layers of the object, then the toplayer will only printed in the ending level of the surface.

Wenn der Druck also weiter nach oben geht, wird der Untergrund nicht mit Toplayern belegt.

Hi,

Yes, this is a known problem. I have exchanged emails with s3d tech support explaining the issue but they did not indicate that a fix would be forthcoming. Solution? Use almost any other slicer that doesn't have this bug.

Attach the factory file (go to File > Save Factory File). That will make it much easier to give suggestions

Here is an example of what I mean: The "top layer" at the half hight of the print is not going far enough over the infill. It stops right at the border.

There must be a overlap over the infill to prevent holes... thats a real annoying bug for a $150 software. Or is there a setting, I haven't found yet?

Why do you post such a nonsens what is not helpful?

And where are all the requestions for this "bug" you are speaking from? I dont know them and I read here nearly daily more than a year.

I'm sure its a failure in the construction of the object and / or bad settings.

This issue did have some work done on it in v3. Edo, what version are you running?

The issue was that where there was a vertical wall above a top surface, the top surface was stopping short of the next layer, leaving a weak edge. The changes in v3 were to extend the top surface so it underpinned the perimeters of the layer above. I can remember the thread on the subject...but have no idea how old it is and what it was titled, so it'll probably be hard to find.

Having done a quick test in v3.0.2, it seems this does happen.......but the underpinning doesn't run under all of the perimeters - it runs under all bar the innermost perimeter. Here's what I mean:

Pre v3 it was worse than this - the solid infill(green) stopped short of the outer perimeter. Like this:

An interim solution for this part is to increase the number of perimeters so the top attaches better. And there needs to be an error reported that the fix already done doesn't quite work as it ought to.....because the infill falls one perimeter (at least) short.

I attach a factory file that illustrates the problem.

The solid layer on top of the "arms" of the part stops immediately
underneath the perimeters of the central boss. I believe it would be
much better if the solid layers extended beyond the perimeters well
into the central area. Indeed, if the raised item isn't actually very
big then the solid layers should go all the way across. As it is, the
part is very weak because when it is flexed, the solid layer breaks
away from the perimeter of the raised boss.

What you are doing at the moment is:

Where x = infill, - = solid layer and | = perimeter.

The solid layers should extend far enough into the infill
region so that they cross at least one infill filament before
finishing. That gives the solid layer filament a chance to "grip" on
something rather than just stopping in mid air (in the gaps between the
infill filaments) like it does at the moment. Paradoxically, using
larger infill diameter (say 200%) makes the problem worse because the
gaps in the infill get larger. The solid layers should take that into
account and reach the far side of the infill "diamond" before stopping.

If you don't think that everyone would like that, why not add a
parameter that specifies how far solid layers should project into
infilled regions? Then we can tweak it to our satisfaction.

A related area which I think S3D gets wrong is that it puts infill
below small raised features like this:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Doing this means that the top layers are segmented and that produces
visible smears and changes in texture which detract from the look of
the part. I believe it would be far better if it simply did this for
small raised features:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

That way, the solid layers can be printed in larger pieces (obviously
depending on what other features are present) and the visual quality of
the part is improved.

That is exactly my problem!

My file is fine, I even made a very simple (a small ontop of a large box) and it still happens. When there is no setting in the software, this is a bug...

This factory-file is for me without any issue.
The center-area, where the cylinder will be build, has no top-layers and that seems normal for me.
