Problem with finishing layers

Hi,

I have the following question which I cannot find an answer to:

The finishing top layers are not smooth, but look likes it's still the fill in pattern. I have set bottom and top layer finish on 6.
But the results are no nice finishing layers, that is also seen in the preview mode. With ReplicatorG (my former software I used) this is no problem.
So it looks to me I cannot find the setting in Simplify3D and there is no problem with my printer.

Also see the pictures. The Orange one is printed with Repg.
Someone who knows where to find the correct setting for this?

Re: Problem with finishing layers

It looks like you have an extrusion multiplier that is far too low. You may also want to increase you infill outline overlap percentage.

Re: Problem with finishing layers

I figured out that it was the extrusion width which was way to high.
But what I don't understand is that when the settings comes with a 0,4mm nozzle for my printer, the width is 0,84mm.
Simplify3D makes printing easier they advertise, but if they took the width the same as the nozzle diameter I shouldn't have search for hours to a solution :(

Re: Problem with finishing layers

I thought I solved this, but past two weeks I kept struggling to get the first bottom layer nice and smooth with a solid infill.
Things I have adjusted to get it better:
- Changed Z-offset in Gcode.
- changed the extrusion multiplier
- changed the extrusion width to a value below the nozzle diameter (this comes the closest to a nice bottom layer then the other settings, nozzle 0,4 extrusion width 0,24) But as expected gave problems to the wall print
- 1st layer width

I cannot get it printed as smooth as Cura does. Below 2 pictures of the differences.

I have a Wanhao 4S printer. Can someone give me advice how to get this right?

Re: Problem with finishing layers

One addition:

When I print a raft with the right settings, the bottom of the raft is perfect and smooth, all horizontal line fit together! So it can be possible. But the first layer of the object is not like that.

Re: Problem with finishing layers

your either still under extruding or you z-height on your printer is set so the bed gap is too big. have you run a thin wall calibration cube? you need to do that to calibrate the extruder settings. did you put a micrometer on your filament to measure it and have that value set correctly in the software. if that is correct and you have your multiplier set correctly by doing a calibration cube then your bed gap is off.

Re: Problem with finishing layers

Yes, Have al done that.
Setting the extrusion multiplyer higher seems to better print the bottom layer, but when the object is getting taller, the nozzles ends in the object and a few layers later is digging into the printed object, few layers later it's moving the object from the bed.

Also there are mistakes like in the picture below that leave gaps in the printing.
