Viewport Navigation - Can We Get Industry Standard Options?

It seems that every 3d software or tool wants to re-invent the wheel when it comes to viewport navigation. Simplify appears to be no different and throws yet another UI paradigm into my already scrambled brain that switches between 3ds Max, Maya, Zbrush, Mari, Mudbox, Agisoft Photoscan and countless other software all day long :)

This being said, the UI in S3D for orbiting/panning/zooming is a little on the clunky side to say the least. The biggest offender for me personally is the middle mouse button being assigned to RESET your viewport, which I hit constantly since other packages use it for navigation. It would be so nice if you could adapt either Max or Maya's method of view nav since those are by FAR them most widely accepted as industry standard. Plus they just work really well. At the very least make it an option?

Thanks,
M

this would be a good place to once again vote +1 for 3d mouse support.

For the kind of manipulation I do in S3D, I actually think it has the best UI options around. I can't stand having to use meta keys or anything other than the left mouse button and scroll wheel to do simple manipulations like rotation and zoom. At the very least I would want an option to keep it the same.

I guess the main issues I had with the default kb UI wasn't the view manipulation itself, but instead the annoying reset on mmb. That was easy to change using the customize options. The UI for object transforms is another topic altogether, which is why I started a separate thread.

its my understanding that the s3d developers arent responsible for adding 3d mouse support. logitech actually writes the driver for the mouse and integrates that into the software. basically it is up to logitech. i dont know all the details on the business end of how that works but im sure s3d would need to contact logitech to show that they are interested in having 3d mouse support added to their software.

+1 for 3D mouse. I constantly switch between solidworks and S3D and its just sad and slow to not use the 3D mouse in S3D.

What would also help and really can't cost much is the "zoom to pointer" functionality where the zoom coming from the mouse wheel not stubbornly keeps using the center of the build plate to zoom to but the mouse pointer; that way one can zoom right to the point of interest without using the pan afterwards to get the part area back onto the screen

cheers

+1 on Space Navigator. I'm so used to using it that I try it every time I'm in S3D.

It appears that they have a Software Development Kit and they claim it's a simple thing to add support. The SDK info is here: http://www.3dconnexion.com/service/soft ... loper.html
