Replicator 5th Generation - Tried New Smart Extruder?

Has anyone tried the new smart extruder for the Makerbot replicator 5th generation? I'm have a plethora of problems with it (I know, I probably should have read the non Makerbot-funded reviews before buying).

From jamming, to underextrusion, to failed first layers, air printing, homing errors, I have experienced it and tried everything. At least 50+ hours of work has gone into watching the thing, debugging, playing with firmware settings, changing Simplify3D settings, calibration, etc. I'm relatively new to 3D printing but I know what I'm doing (I have a mechanical engineering background).

I've now got three options:

1. Try out the factory new Smart Extruder (Makerbot claims they have fixed a boatload of these problems) for $175 + shipping. If that doesn't work, sell and do one of the following:
2. Sell it as-is and buy another 3D printer. I am looking at the MakerGear M2.
3. Sell it as-is and outsource part printing

What do you all think? I am really troubled here. This thing is pretty useless the way it is now.

I know they've been promising an new smart extruder for a while, but are you able to actually notice a difference in this "new" smart extruder? I'm really curious to know what they've changed. If you're comfortable with taking things apart and putting things back together (not everyone is, so proceed with caution) I was able to unjam from the pictures s3d has on their setup guide;
