Help me make my prints look better

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to 3D printing. I have a Robo R1 3D and just got S3D. I've been working through the overhang and different settings tutorials and ran into trouble. Even though I used the recommended settings from the tutorial, when I tried to print the following I got sort of cruddy results.

This guy (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:269639/#files) at 1/2 scale printed ok on top, but the bottom has a lot of jagged rough edges where the support structures were.

This one (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5504/#files) looks even worse. The outer edges warped and what should be a smooth knot has distinct banding.

I've attached pictures that hopefully show this clearly.

If someone could tell me what is going wrong and how to improve it, I would really appreciate it.

I've printed that knot without support structures many times, so I might try it without supports next and see how it looks. If the outlines still look really bad, then your probably have an issue like overheating or over-extrusion (but it's kinda hard to tell from that bright yellow filament )

I was wondering if anyone had experience with setting things up so that the break away for supports was clean and had minimal loose threads. For $150, it should have at least that much ability.

Try adding a 2-3 dense layers, and add at least one layer of vertical separation distance. Could also increase the support percentage.

The print in the photos seem to be having other issues than just supports. Looks like some layers are thinner in diameter than others. Could be something loose on the machine. Also check that the filament is being fed properly and not catching on the spool.
