Multiple Passes

Hi Everyone not sure where to post this or if anyone has posted anything like this. I've took some time to research and look, but I'm so new to the field of 3D Printing I don't even know what this is called. So here is a picture

.

I'm using the GigabotXL with Simplify 3D. First I've tried printing through the USB then I tried printing through the MicroSD card straight to the printer both times it started to "put multiple passes" at the same pass... First thought was that it might be something wrong with the way simplify is writing the GCODE but I'm stumped and really need some help.

Thanks

Re: Multiple Passes

Is it printing a raft? How about you post the factory file? (File > Save Factory File) That way we can see what exact settings you are using.

It is also very possible the issue is due to your bed not being level, or the nozzle being too close to the bed when it starts printing. So in the meantime, you may also want to level the bed ;)

JoeJ thanks for taking the time. I've checked the bed it's all good there, and the nozzle is right on. Here is the factory file

. This a machine just out of the box so this is the first attempt at a print. I've also attempted to print something much smaller, but it did it all over again. :? Again thanks for your help!

Wow, what a massive print!

I opened your factory file and sliced the file. It looks like the Gcode Previewer is generating correctly (there are no repeated lines in the raft). I've found for larger prints, SD card really helps, but as you mentioned there's issues in the print even when you run off of SD card.

The Gcode previewer shows the first layer being printed, the second layer tracing those lines, then a cross-stitched layer after that. Does this occur for smaller prints as well?

Yes, It did it with a much smaller print 2in x 10in. Running it from SD Card

Re: Multiple Passes

The gcode created from your factory file definitely looks correct. You are welcome to check it for yourself. The second layer is printed at higher Z-height than the first layer. You can see this in the preview as well. So the gcode the software is generating is correct.

If it helps, next time you print this part, watch the Z-axis screws/belts right after the first layer is completed. You will probably see them spin as the head moves up to the second layer. Give it a test, and let us know if that's happening.

If so, then you have to look at other factors. Perhaps the printer is extruding too much, so it looks like it's running over the same area twice (in reality, just because it extruded wayy too much the first time around). I would also definitely do all future tests from the SD card only, just so you can rule out any USB issues. As I mentioned, bed position it another factor (different than bed being level, this is essentially your Z=0 adjustment).

Re: Multiple Passes

JoeJ thanks I did re-position the Bed to the proper place before I got a little breeding, but quickly compensated for that after the print.

Okay what i did here was to try and print a different part, but still got the same layer building issue. :? , however i did notice that the software is getting ahead of the actual printer, not sure if it matters

as you can see the preview does not match the machine in real time, I've tried everything but cant get a good print kinda frustrating :(

Re: Multiple Passes

I wonder if your x-axis belt is loose. Or the set screw for the motor is slipping. The gcode is clearly telling the printer to have more spacing between those lines, but from your picture, it looks like the toolhead didn't move over far enough. I'd start looking at a mechanical or electrical issue that is causing the motors not to position the head in the correct position. That would also explain why no one has been able to find anything wrong with the gcode that you are getting from the software. Unfortunately, most 3D printers have open-loop control systems, which means there is no feedback for where the toolhead is actually positioned. So if there was a mechanical issue that prevented the printer from getting to the correct position, the printer wouldn't even know.

And FYI, it is normal for the preview to be ahead of the print by a few lines. The printers usually buffer 10-20 commands for performance reasons.

Re: Multiple Passes

Hi Everyone, it was a frustrating week to say the least, but I finally have the solution. One of the Motor Drivers was bad and which cause the Y Motor and overheated about 20 minutes into the print, i was told to switch the X Driver and the Y Driver in the control box and sure enough started to print properly, still have a bad driver, but will get that replaced. Like I said I'm new to this and I'm sure I'll have ton more questions :D

Thank you guys for all your help.
