Rerap MarlinSupport

Hi Everyone

Is there anyone here that run the Simply3d sodtware on a Rerap Marlin printer?

I want to get feedback from anyone of this before I buy the software?

Any tips & tricks would help.

Yes, they already fully support the marlin firmware. There's dozens of Marlin-based printers already on this list: https://www.simplify3d.com/software/supported-printers/

Re: Rerap MarlinSupport

My main printer is one I built myself that uses an AzteegX3 controller running Marlin firmware. Simplify3D works fine with it. Simplify3D will not directly support the firmware retraction that is in Marlin. The only reason that I would care about that is that firmware retraction allows a different speed for filament reload versus retraction. Simplify3D, however, has some nice options like Coast... It is possible to use a post-processing script to put in the firmware retraction GCode. I played with it briefly and it mostly worked, but I occasionally got some odd behavior (like the nozzle just sitting in some retract locations and spitting out a big blob). I expect it could have been ironed out, but I eventually decided that the Simplify3d retraction settings were good enough. The whole idea behind firmware retraction is that you can change the retract on a file without having to reslice - but once your retract is dialed in, you just don't do that unless you move to another printer (and then there are likely other changes needed anyway). I do wish Simplify3D would add a separate reload speed though. I am not aware of anything else that isn't supported. Maybe not setting of acceleration for specific print tasks (bridge, support, perimeter, infill). That isn't that they don't support Marlin, though. It is just that they have not yet added that feature.

Re: Rerap MarlinSupport

Thank you everyone

I just bought the software and am busy printing my first print with it.

I also build my own printer, and can not wait to see how the software change my printing experience.

One thing I did noticed, is that the print time / % estimate is way out. The print said it will take 43mins, and I am going for 02:40. And the software say 61% / 12mins left. I times it, and it when it was 15 mins left, it took about 60 mins to do the print.

Where can I set this to be more accurate?

Re: Rerap MarlinSupport

The print time estimates won't take things like preheating into account, so if your printer takes 20 minutes to heat up, that won't be reflected in the time estimate. There's also a bunch of firmware logic that overrides the commands that S3D sends. So the software may tell the printer to do a specific action that it thinks will take 10 seconds, but the firmware can override this command with acceleration, speed limits, overrides, and other factors that will affect it.

Re: Rerap MarlinSupport

What I did notice, is that the speed of the defaults are high. When I changed them to be the same as in My other software, the printing time changed. I am not sure how they calculate this in Simplify3d.

Does anyone have tips how to calculate your particular 3d printer speeds?
