varying layer height

Hi.
is it possible to vary layer height in a print ?
an example is printing a new filament spool with threads on each end.
this is a 13cm high model with 15mm of thread each end.
so on the thread ends i want good detail 0.1mm layer height
but in the 10cm shaft its a waste of time having it set this low so i want to print the 1st 15mm 0.1mm layer height then change to 0.3 for the next 10cm then back to 0.1mm for the last 15mm ..
can this be accomplished ?
the only way i can see to do it would be layer modifications and doing it as 3 separate prints using stop and starts
