Pathing question with Dual Extrusion

What I have is an iPhone case that I have some lettering and logo in the back of it that I am dual printing. Initially I had the thickness of the lettering and logo geometry at 1.75mm and the back of the case is 2mm. I realized that there was no need for that extra thickness on the lettering and logo and took it down to .8mm as I am doing .2mm layers.

I assumed that by doing this my print time would decrease as it wasn't having to do all those layers of intricate lettering, but what I see when I slice it and then look through layer by layer is that is does 4 layers of the lettering in the extruder I set to that stl but then it goes to the other extruder but continues to trace out and fill in the letters with the other extruder as if it was still there. I assumed it would switch to to my infill setting which is 30% and that would speed up the print.

Why do you think it slices the model this way even though the lettering stl is only .8mm of the overall 2mm? I have top and bottom solid layers set to 3, but it does the lettering at 100% infill until the last 3 layers and then it stops tracing out the lettering and logo.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Pathing question with Dual Extrusion

Hi Chris

What you're seeing is an additional number of bottom layers being printed above a downward facing recess....and the shape of the area that is printed matches the lettering.

Difficult to explain...but look at this preview of a box with a rectangular recess in the bottom face:
letters.JPG
There are three bottom layers (shown in green). Note the bottom layers over the recess...that's what you're seeing as ghost letters!

You can get rid of these bottom layers by having two profiles for the body of the case. The first exactly as your current profile, but stop it printing at 0.8mm (Advanced tab in settings). Have a second profile starting at 0.8mm (Advanced tab in settings), but change the bottom solid layers to zero(Layer tab in settings).

Ahhh, that makes complete sense why it is happening. Can I create this extra process when using the Dual extrusion wizard?

Re: Pathing question with Dual Extrusion

Not having worked with anything other than a single extruder printer I can't answer from experience.....but I can't see it not working.

You'll just need to create the extra profile as an exact copy of the original profile for the case, including specifying the same extruder, then modify one so it prints the first 0.8mm and has top layers set to zero. Modify the other so it prints from 0.8mm and set the bottom layers to zero. Its as simple as that....

Have a read of this tutorial so you get the idea before making changes:

So if I am reading this right, split the case process into 2 processes one that prints the first.8mm of the case with no top solid infill layers and then a second process that prints from .8mm to the finish with no bottom solid fill layers
