Software Bug???

I'm having a problem setting up my stl file for a duct. Seems like Simplfy 3D keeps filling the duct model no matter what I do to it. I repaired using Nebfabb and this problem keeps coming up. Any solutions?

Can you post your factory file (File > Save Factory File)? That will make it much easier for us to give suggestions

I have sometimes the same problem.
Attached factory file. There's always one top layer printed, which is not in the object.

Re: Software Bug???

This is usually a problem with the STL file. I find that S3D is sensitive to some numerical issues in the STL, and the problem is especially prevalent when there are a very large number of facets and when sharp changes in the surface happen exactly on the layer boundary.

There are two solutions you can try. With the current file, try increasing your layer height by 0.0001 mm. That usually works.

Even better, try producing an STL with fewer facets. Many CAD tools produce insanely over-detailed STL that is much more precise than your printer has any hope of living up to. In Rhino, I usually start with a 6-degree maximum angle and 0.01 maximum edge-to-surface distance, and most of the time I get a very, very nice part out of that.

I'm not surprised you're having issues slicing your file. It's not manifold; it has missing faces. Use the Identify non-manifold edges option on the Repair menu and you'll see what I mean.

I assume you didn't try the advise I gave in the last thread you started re this object...or at least an earlier version of it?

If you try it, you might be surprised....

Oh, look. A clean slice:

Re: Software Bug???

Hi Doug,

I see what you mean, this came even from a site with 100% guaranteed printable files :)
The problem is that you have to check over and over before you print. Mostly I only see a problem after printing.
In S3D you see that there's only a problem when you check for manifolds.

For example, if I use Slicer for this STL, after loading I immediately get a message that slicing could give problems due to the non water tied edges.
But when I ignore that, this file is sliced correctly and printed correctly.

I think that there can be some improvements in a next version of S3D to overcome these problems.
