Top layer issue

This issue is driving me nuts. I use to get cleaner top layers on my TAZ 5.

Now I thought it was an infill overlap issue (normally set to about 10%) but I have taken it down to 0 and up to 30 without the issue changing much at all.

Now, I don't believe I am over extruding as the infill lines barely touch each other, if I reduce the extrusion a small amount then there is a gap between the infill lines.

I have also raised and lowered the perimeter overlap amount again with very little change.

So when the infill changes direction at the edge there is an excess of material, otherwise the print is fine.

Any ideas?

Re: Top layer issue

It's usually not a good idea to try to judge whether or not you are over-extruding by looking at the infill spacing on your top layers. That can be HEAVILY influenced by the number of top layers, the infill spacing/pattern below it, etc. A better test would be to print a cube that has zero infill, zero top/bottom solid layers, but has 5+ outline perimeters. Then you can adjust the extrusion multiplier until you start to see gaps between those perimeters. That's a much more reliable way to do it.

Personally, your pic looks like it's over-extruding a bit on the perimeters, so I would still think you might want to decrease that value some. Then there are many other reasons why you would have gaps in your top layers (https://www.simplify3d.com/support/prin ... top-layers)

Re: Top layer issue

Fixed.

After trying every combination I just could not get a good print. Thankfully I figured out where the temporary setting are stored on Mac and since I use time machine I was able to just bring back a known good setting from December and my prints are buttery smooth again.

This time I saved the setting out instead of relying on the program to just remember the last setting so now I will always have a known good starting point for any changes in the future.
