Preventing dragging?

How exactly can I prevent nozzle dragging when moving between parts or previously layed filament? Say I have a circle and a square and it moves from the farthest corner of the square to the circle. How would I configure it so that if it moves the nozzle without extruding anything it will lift up .5mm or something? I read a few help files but not sure they are going to do exactly what I am requesting but could be wrong.
