lag between moves

I have an issue where I am getting dimples on my parts from a 0.5 sec lag between moves.
so on features like holes or even the perimeter layers I have a mark where each move stops.
I am printing it on a 3DP1000, does anyone have any advise of what settings could affect this?

Re: lag between moves

I doubt it's actually lagging, it's probably just doing a retraction (which if you didn't notice the filament was moving, you might think it was standing still).

So you can of course get rid of this if you want, but then you will probably have other problems. But either way, sounds like you just need to adjust some of the retraction distances/speeds.

Re: lag between moves

do you have any recommended starting points?
my retraction distance is 0.5mm and i'm using a non bowden E3DV6
I'm not giving it any extra distance at startup

Also I thought the filament only retracts for moves over a certain distance, the setting that i thought controlled this is set at 5mm and I thought this was only for non print moves

on my next print I will turn the retraction off and see what that changes and report back, thanks for helping

Re: lag between moves

So it looks like the printer is retracting between every move whether it is a print or non print move.
is there a way to change this?
I would like to be able to have it retract when moving farther distances and have it not retract when printing perimeter shell layers
If I print a cube each time it completes a perimeter layer it will stop and retract and then start printing the next layer

Re: lag between moves

You can reduce the number of retracts with a couple of options in the advanced tab - namely enabling "Only retract when crossing open spaces" and disabling "Force retraction between layers"

Those look like quite significant pauses, if your retraction is only at 0.5mm, it shouldn't take anywhere near 0.5 seconds to perform a retract. I use a retraction speed of 30mm/s, so a 0.5mm retract would be virtually instant. It definitely shouldn't be leaving huge blemishes like that. I'd ask the manufacturer of the machine if there's something odd they might be doing in firmware.
