Adaptive Layer Height

When i am printing an object, i have to either choose a larger layer height to print quick but poor quality, or i can print with smaller layer height for better quality but suffer with longer printing time. But i noticed that most models do not require a thinner layer height everywhere on the model, it is only small features and slopes that come out poorly due to the resolution of slicing.

If i have a large model with small details, it will take a very long time to print with smaller layer height when a similar quality can be achieved if we have automatic adaptive layer height. It would be very useful to have a feature that automatically detects small features and sloping surfaces and slices them at a thinner layer height than the rest of the model. I think this should be designed based on two criteria, feature size and slope of surface.

A) Smallest feature perimeter/ effective diameter.
When this option is selected, any feature with smaller perimeter (island) or effective diameter than specified by the user should be sliced at smaller layer height than rest of the model. This does not mean the whole slice plane should be made thinner, instead only that feature is sliced thinner. Meaning there will be two layers deposited of the small feature for every one layer of the rest of the model. The tree picture illustrates this.

B) Surface Slope Angle
I noticed that the tops of models are the worst looking areas of my prints due to apparent stepping. There should be a setting that automatically selects smaller layer height based on the slope of the surface. This could be specified by user in angle range. As an example for a model slice at 0.3 mm, we can specify to use 0.2 mm for surfaces ranging from 40 deg to 70 deg and 0.1 mm for surfaces ranging from 70 deg to 89 deg. The sphere picture illustrates this.

Such feature will save a lot of time and improve print quality and i hope to see it in the next update of Simplify3D.

Also, i would like request to have an option in the preview section to view by layer thickness whereby we can see different layer heights as different colors for a quick quality check.

Excuse my poor MS paint skills

Wow, nice idea man!
It would be amazing to have such feature!

Re: Adaptive Layer Height

Just having the perimeter slice at 100 micron with the fill at 300 would be a suitable alternative, and there would be no sudden change in appearance on the part.
