Ubuntu install requires su power - but fails to create icon

Hooray ... V4.0 arrived! Unfortunately, still no proper *.deb installation file.
Without this, it is not an upgrade but a fresh install of Simplify3D.
Will S3D 4.0 take care of my previous license?

And here is what happens during installation of 4.0:

Code: Select all

Do you accept this license? [y/n]: y

Please specify the directory where Simplify3D Software will be installed.
Installation Directory [/opt/Simplify3D-4.0.0]:

Setup is now ready to begin installing Simplify3D Software on your computer.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]: y
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please wait while Setup installs Simplify3D Software on your computer.

Setup has finished installing Simplify3D Software on your computer.
Launch Simplify3D now [Y/n]: y

QXcbConnection: Could not connect to display :0
The latter can be solved through "xhost local:root"

But the installation failed to create a desktop icon, obviously because of missing rights.
So one has still to use the "cd /opt/Simplify3D-4.0.0; ./LaunchScript.sh" method.

Sigh. I'd really love to buy another license of Simplify3D ... if it were properly installable in Ubuntu.

It actually installed fine for me on my Ubuntu installation. No errors and the desktop icon showed up fine.

Have you tried a fresh Ubuntu install to see if it's possible something with your installation? Do you have your desktop configured in an odd location with any special permissions?

Indeed, it would be greatly appreciatable to get clean .DEB/.RPM packages rather than that rubbish windows-like installer.

Re: Ubuntu install requires su power - but fails to create icon

I've not purchased Simplify3D yet, but Ubuntu 17.10 is my OS of choice, and if there's silly issues like having to run the program as ROOT, I might not purchase it.
Many of programs I've looked at are simply Windoze programs running on mono... Linux users want the improved power and performance they are used to compared to windows.
With the money back guarantee, I might purchase it and see how it goes, then return it if it has as many issues as I hear about.

They definitely DONT use mono. It's a native 64-bit Linux app. Runs quite well on my 8-core linux box and slices incredibly fast :D
