Best way to tune retraction settings

I'm using the stock settings on retraction but I'm getting a little extra material between travel spaces sometimes.
Which settings on retraction would be best to help fix this?

Current:
retraction distance 1mm
extra restart distance 0
vertical lift 0
retraction speed 1200
no coasting or wipe.

Re: Best way to tune retraction settings

Here are a few results after experimenting a bit.

retraction distance helps create a vacuum on the nozzle but doesn't get material out of the nozzle.
enabling coasting helped to wipe the material off the end of the nozzle.
On advanced tab I unchecked the option to only retract over open spaces and this also helped where I had strands of material over a flat layer.
