I've not been too happy with my top layers, even though I have four or five shells on the top. But on many of my recent prints, it didn't matter too much.
But on my latest print, almost half the build ends up being nothing but top layers (lots of flat surfaces that assemble later).
So while I've been working through my usual tweaks to get everything right, I have also been changing my extrusion width by about .5 mm after not having much difference with my extrusion multiplier.
Finally tonight I got the top layer I've been looking for...nice and smooth.
So, on my Extruder Toolhead settings..
Nozzle Diameter: 0.40 mm
Extrusion Multiplier: 0.90
Extrusion Width (manual) 0.60k
I'm building at 0.10 height, 3500 mm/minute speed, zero infill (these are thin parts, but I had the same issue before and switched to zero infill and still had my toolhead pattern on the top).
Just thought I'd share. It was an issue to me to not be able to print large, flat areas without lines. I still get a hint of them at 0.60, but I can live with them NOT being large ridges.

when you get ridges like that its a sign of over extrusion. lowering the multiplier or raising the filament dia setting will push out less material. the dia has a larger effect than the multiplier. multiplier is more of a fine tune.
