Re: Odd scaling issue Autodesk

In your "Send to 3D Print Service Dialog" click the option button make sure the export units are what you want. I have a hunch it is set to centimeters.

can you post your exported STL? or have you tried to import the STL back to the software you exported from. It looks like Inventor. When I tried to export from inventor I ran into no problems.
1. made a 1 inch box
2. export the box using Export >> CAD format
3. In the save as Choose STL and then Options
4. Under unis change to Inches if it is not already. The default was centimeters.
5. Import into S3D and the "Auto Scale Option" opened. Clicked yes
and got this.
inch7.PNG
looks like a 1 inch box.

Re: Odd scaling issue Autodesk

I think it is worth restating what I posted previously for clarification.

STL file do not...I repeat, do not....hold any information as to the actual physical size of the object. All dimensions are in UNITS...ie a cube can be 1 UNIT by 1 UNIT by 1 UNIT....and 1 UNIT could be absolutely anything....1 cm, 1 mm, 1 inch, 1 sausage...anything!

When an stl file is created, the length ( ijn UNITS ) of each edge of the object is derived as a number of units based on a factor within the software the file is being exported from.

Similarly, when an stl file is imported, the length ( in mm, or cm, or inches, etc ) of each edge of the object is derived as a number of units based on a factor within the software the file is being imported into.

If the factors in the two software packages do not match....then the object will appear to change size. This is NOT an error in either software package...it is a mismatch between the user changeable factor fields in the software.

The solution to the issue is to identify what each factor is and make them match.....or to identify what scaling factor is needed to correct the size, and apply it to the model either before exporting, or after importing. S3D does have a feature to automatically scale each object on loading;.

Re: Odd scaling issue Autodesk

Interesting...

100% of the time, I create my .stl file from Inventor via Print -> Send to 3D...by doing it in this fashion, scale not proper in Inventor 2018. BUT if I Export (and it was defaulted to Centimeter), change to inches...its 1". The "Options" here was the key factor. as NOW I can print -> send to 3D...and it is proper.

Yes, I fully understand and agree with all you have posted in this thread...it was finding that set factor that was key here.

It is all about learning all the ins and outs which software you use to model. Turns out with inventor the options for export and send to 3d service is the same dialog box.

This topics comes up about once every 2 months.

Re: Odd scaling issue Autodesk

I think i have a solution:
no matter what scale you build it at, it is imported at 1 tenth the actual scale. After importing the object, just multiply it by 10 and that is your scaled object!
