Support with outlines for high quality prints

Hi,

I'm printing a helix with 75 degree overhang in PET-G (PLA support), but i'm having trouble to get the surface quality on the underside of the helix. I'm would like to have support with outlines, just as the actual part would have. Is this possible in simplify3D?

Thanks.

If I understand what you're asking then the feature you're looking for is dense support. If you set this to 100% then it will create a 100% layer (or layers, you can select) at the top of the support structure.

Your support setting need to be adjusted.. it is a bear to figure out and every model is different. I am in the process of printing small fingers for a child's prosthetic arm and hand. For curved items horizontal separation must be keep small .10 -.12 or you surface will look like what you have.
You need sufficient support 45-50% and I have had very little luck with Dense support. This "I think" is more useful when you are using water soluble support. I find for small items 1mm resolution with only one angle works best for me. But in the end, you have to spend time and plastic to experiment to get the best results! You must also raise and or tilt you model if there is no flat surface ..
Good luck

Re: Support with outlines for high quality prints

Thanks for the replies, i'm using scaffold water soluble support and i have been printing using dense support. This results in the support being 100% infill for the top x amount of layers, but what i would like to achieve is to have an outline of the support structure parallel to the actual model. I was wondering if there would be such a function within simplify3D without actually having to model the support itsself in an .stl file.

Thanks again!

Japie,

There isn't currently a way to have your support have outlines without the "supports" having been modeled rather than generated by Simplify3D. This seems more like a feature request. Moving to proper sub-forum.
