I thought Simplify3D could do this...

A 50% smaller layer height for the outer perimeter shells. This would be like printing at 1/2 the layer height without the time impact. A print set to .3mm layer height would have the look of a print with a .15mm layer height.
If it can't... How about thinking about it?!

Toby, it can but its for all the perimeters then your infill is printed twice as thick. So if you normally print at .2 then you ca set layer height to .1 then set the infill to print at .2. I know its not just the outer shell but its close.

Sorry... I do not see how to do that. Could you please be more specific about how you set the infill to .2?

I tried 2 processes. 1st at .15mm with perimeters tops and bottoms with 0 infill percentage. Then a 2nd process at .3mm layer height with single shell perimeters top and bottoms with 30% infill. Without perimeters and tops and bottoms it does not work. The preview showed it worked but the time to print was the same time to print as a single process all at .15mm.

Tried again...

This time I put the 1st process at .3mm and the 2nd at .15. In the first I set the perimeters to inside out and in the 2nd the perimeters are set to outside in. I also have the supports only at .3. According to the preview it worked at it saves around 2 hours of print time.

Did it again... and this time have the 2nd set to only 1 shell for the perimeter and the 1st set to 3. This way only the outer most shell is the lower layer height, higher quality.
Wow! It worked and it saved over 6 hours of print time!!

Toby set your perimeters at the layer height you want, say .15 then in the infill section set sparse infill to 2. This prints your infill every 2 layers but prints it thick and doubles the layer height. With spars infill at 2 on a .15 layer height then your infill prints at .3 and saves a bunch of time since its only printed every other layer.

Cool idea... but what about supports??? Based on how we all assume it works supports will also be .15mm layer height. Using 2 processes not only can we all set the infill at .3mm we also can get the supports at that lower res...
Wait!
There's a print sparse support too!
One big difference though... when I use 2 processes and set it so that only the outer perimeter shell is a real low layer height I get significant time savings in the print. Using Sparse infill all the perimeter shells will be at the lower layer height and the savings time wise is not nearly as big.
