Adding raft causes print to be .5mm tall after removing raft

Hi everyone,

I just started using S3D at home and liked it so much I switched it over at our lab at work too. I have one main issue...less of a deal at home, more of a deal at work. Whenever I/we print with a raft, the part ends up being about half a mm tall in the Z axis. If I print the part without the raft, it's dead nuts on correct Z axis height. It does this with my Monoprice Maker V2.1 at home, and Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker 2+ at work.

I'm assuming there's some sort of simple setting I need to adjust, can't find it though.

Ideas?

Thanks!

How have you set the following parameters?
Additions-Use Raft-Separation Distance

A posting of a FFF configuration file will acquire a better information.

Re: Adding raft causes print to be .5mm tall after removing raft

I'll post an fff on monday when I get back to work. Also, I designed a z-axis calibration block, 7 steps with one at every 10mm. I'll be able to measure it Monday morning, will post results then.

My settings at home, that offset is .14mm, at work it's something like .35mm.

Re: Adding raft causes print to be .5mm tall after removing raft

Measured the step block I printed. Every z axis measurement is .4mm long with a raft, spot on without the raft. The Separation Distance in the raft settings is .4mm, so I'm guessing that the issue is coming from that setting.

Is there anything we can do to fix that added height?

Please adjust by Z Offset. The error of size will become small.

Re: Adding raft causes print to be .5mm tall after removing raft

What ViperZ has written may help for the moment, but it is surely not the solution!

I have tested it with 2 steps on a 10 mm - object at 3 mm and finaly 10 mm.

Layer Height 0,20 mm - without raft
3 mm = 15 layers
10 mm = 50 layers
same with raft
raft = 5 layers, in the print preview Z = 1,917 mm / expected 1 mm (diffence may be caused by the settings of raft)
3 mm = 20 layers (15 + 5) Preview Z = 5,057 mm / difference absolut = 3,14 mm ( cause by +/- 1 layer to print yes or no; parts of layers are not possible)
10 mm = 55 layers (50+5) Preview Z = 12,057 mm / difference absolut = 7,00 mm
Height total 3,14 mm + 7,00 mm = 10,14 mm total of 10,00 mm
desired value.

So I guess, there is an other reason to look for!

>Z = 1,917 mm
>Z = 5,057 mm
>Z = 12,057 mm

What did you ask for these values from?

Have a look to the pic,
left corner down inside the printtable at the background, has not much contrast.
But can be read out also in the GCode-file, search to the number of the related layer.

Can you post a factory file?

... this one.
It's a factory for my Anet A 8, settings with raft.

S3D V 4.1.1

If there are any doubts about the measures , here are the concrete dates measured with a caliper gauge

The printed part - printed without raft - has 3,18 - 3,20 in the middel and on front side 3,30 mm. The height finaly has 10,20 mm May be caused by a light overextrusion I have set to make it stronger. It is a tool to my lathe.
