Yeah again though, it's not really my place to install software like that on a work machine. It's a workaround for something which can be resolved by the software package itself. Thanks for the suggestion

S3D is what I use for 99% of my .STL opens, the rest being SolidWorks opens and you need to perform that in a funny manner anyway to pull it in as a solid you can manipulate, so having .stl associated with SW is counterproductive.
If you'd like to remove file associations for STL in Windows you can use this guide. (They used the "bak" file type as an example. You'd simply use STL instead)

I agree this would be best handled by Simplify3D rather than a 3rd party program.

Re: Different file icons

I too wish this was simpler to implement, as would be a time saving improvement. The nearest I have been able to achieve this by downloading the below well documented file type manager program which allows you to change features relating to specific file extensions.

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html

The trouble is making a change to the .gcode file extension (such as changing the associated icon), will unfortunately apply the change to the other file formats that are associated with Simplify3D (.stl and .fff).

What you can do however is tick the box that says ''Always show this File extension''.
gcode tick box.jpg
This means windows explorer and you desktop etc. will all show the file extensions at the end of the file names for these three format types. But crucially means you don't have to use the windows show all extension types for every file on your system, which was a step too far me as added way to much clutter for my liking.

Hope this helps others like me :)

BUT... If anyone finds a better solution please post! As ideally we should be able to associate a dedicated Icon for each file format.... perhaps v5.0 ???

Re: Different file icons

This subject is not fully a S3D problem.....it's the OS that associates an icon with the file type.

Have a read of this. It might help you identify different file types:
