Is support material considered open space?
I've been playing around with retraction settings because I'm attempting to print a part that is primarily support for the first half of the print. I had trouble with the extruder head rubbing against the support and ripping it off the bed so I bumped up the retraction vertical lift to avoid contact. However, the bed is jumping around while printing the actual part and I want to avoid that. I have the "Only retract when crossing open spaces" box unchecked, but I was wondering if I could still have it avoid the support with it checked.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Checking that box won't make it avoid support structures, it just won't retract when crossing other material, like infill. This can lead to strings, but since they're usually on the inside of the object the idea is that they don't matter.
