printing an object with a hole in it

hello everyone! long time no post for me on this forum. i've been printing away... i just noticed this today working on a project. i have a rectangle with a hole in it. the geometry comes from 3ds max. i extruded from a shape of a rectangle with a circle in it. and as far as i can tell the top/bottom are completely flat/planar. it is a solid object, ie) water tight. it is not a boolean and only is 1 object not several attached together.

if i check merge all outlines into a single solid model, i get a solid box printed without a hole in the middle. if i un-check that, it slices as i would have expected it, with the hole. but i'm not sure if this is expected behavior? maybe it's the geometry?

Re: printing an object with a hole in it

i think this is expected.

i've tried a few other objects that i modeled and it previews the same way.

i should also have to say that, when something is "sticking out" is modeled in multiple sub-objects this option does a great job at boolean joining them.
