Enable Automatic Supports Question.

InV4 under "supports" we have the enable support material check box so that when you click prepare to print supports are generated automatically.
In V5, as far as I can tell, if we hit prepare to print we get a dialog asking if you'd like to add supports now and then we get another box where we have to click to auto generate supports then we have to click prepare to print AGAIN.

So instead of S3D auto generating supports when we click prepare to print and just going to the preview mode we now have to click more times to get supports to generate.
This just adds more steps to simply get to the preview mode which includes hitting prepare to print twice.

Re: Enable Automatic Supports Question.

This is a good question. V5 has a slightly different setup than V4.

in V4: Edit Process Settings > Support tab > check the "Generate Support Material" checkbox
in V5: Click support icon on right sidebar > Click "Generate Automatic Supports"

If you really want to minimize clicks in V5, you can actually assign a custom hotkey for the auto support generation so you can do it in a single click :D

We're hoping the new system will be slightly less confusing. In the past, we had customers that would use the custom supports dialog to completely remove all the dark orange pillars in the 3D view, but if their process had support generation enabled the support structures would still be printed. Now the 3D view will better represent what it actually being printed.

Re: Enable Automatic Supports Question.

I can understand.
However, the issue it causes is, for instance, I have a model that will use auto support generation.
I have to go to the support icon and click generate then click print and see how the settings look.
If I need a change then I have to do this each time so it really becomes a very repetitive task. A lot of extra "clicks" just to be able to preview the auto support generation.

It would be good to have the option of auto support generation when you click prepare to print rather than being required to go through all the extra steps.

Thank you.

Re: Enable Automatic Supports Question.

I was confused on how this works for a minute but I actually like it. In v4, If you have multiple processes then you have multiple support settings.

In V5 the supports seem to be made part of the model independent of processes. Each process can still have different support patterns/designs/percents, but v5 just has a global pillar resolution and placement that all processes will look to.

Will have to use it more to see if it becomes an issues. I think it will work better when you have several models and some don't need supports at all. This was kind of a problem with v4. Sometimes I had to fake a 1 pillar manual support on an object that didn't need any support for supports to work on models that did need supports.

Re: Enable Automatic Supports Question.

I don't like it. I want to be able to turn on auto support generation so when you click prepare to print it does the supports with the settings I have set. I don't want to have to jump through a bunch of hoops just to get it to generate supports.

There are plenty of times I hit prepare to print to check things out and then go back and adjust a setting. If I have to go through 3-4 extra steps each time it is really annoying.

One trick to prevent auto supports on parts you don't want supports on is to do all of your custom supports then change the support pillar resolution to 99 and it won't auto generate supports.

Can't do that anymore in V5.

As I use V5 I find that aside from some good new features, they have broken a lot of things that worked fine before. They did this in the last V4 versions also.
I am starting to agree with some of the people saying too little too late. Hope this isn't the case.
