V5 Dense support

WOW did you guys ever blow it BIG time!!!
Dense support has NOT been fixed. It does not take a genius to realize that when the top of the dense support is rough the undersides are rough!!!
Not worth the upgrade AT ALL!!!
The person who makes the decisions at this company SHOULD BE FIRED!!!!!!!!

Re: V5 Dense support

Not sure I understand your gripe. The only way you're going to get smooth a supported build is by using a different material for the support that is either soluble or does not bond to the part - such as PLA support on a PETG build. Then you can set separation layers for zero and get a smooth build on top of support.

That's not really a function of dense support, but separation distance and adhesion (or lack thereof) to the support.
Are you expecting dense support with no layer lines or something?

In V5 support options are changed much.
Right now, you can choose pattern of the supports.
What is weird to me, is that if you choose Grid supports and 100% dense infill you end up with a roughly 50% grid pattern on the top.
But it works ok if you select Rectilinear support pattern.

I believe the spacing is determined based on the amount of plastic actually extruded within the layer. Since grid actually prints 2 directions on the same layer, you need extra spacing otherwise you would extra far too much plastic to fit within that layer.

In other words, if you tried to print the 100% grid infill, I think you would see that the layer is basically completely solid.

Re: V5 Dense support

When you choose 100% for dense support infill you want it to be 100% solid,

Re: V5 Dense support

Yes, it should be 100% solid if you set the fill to 100%. Even though the lines are spaced out, it's extruding enough plastic to 100% fill the layer. The extra plastic has to go somewhere so it will move into the gaps. If you tried to extrude more plastic than this, the layer would have too much material and it would start overflowing and ruin the dimensions.

Re: V5 Dense support

Yes... that is correct and this new setting at 100% does get me way closer to what we REALLY need and yes this is for when I use PLA for support on a PETG object. What we need is a surface on the top of the dense support that is at least as clean as the top of the print. It's not as bad as I had assumed from the preview.
Ah... but there's other things...

Try using rectilinear at 100% instead of grid for the dense support.
