V5 - Custom Support Shapes

Custom Support Shapes
Supports can now be defined based on a custom 3D model file, unlocking new capabilities for even the most complex prints.

Can someone explain what this feature is?

1) does it only mean I can import a STL and define it as support (Import Model -> right click on imported model -> change model type -> custom support structure)

2) does it mean we can edit support - place them and move the anchor points instead of just vertical default supports? Like it is possible in a lot of free slicers - especially resin ones (e.g. Chitubox etc)

Also, are there plans for more advanced support such as tree or organic supports (available in free slicers since quite some time)?

Thanks

Re: V5 - Custom Support Shapes

I believe that feature is meant to allow you to define a custom shape for your support structure using a STL file. Like you said, you can then convert that to a support structure by right-clicking on the model and selecting Change Model Type. This way the software will print that part with support structure toolpaths instead of regular model toolpaths (perimeters, solid layers, etc).

A big goal of V5 is to prove that the new foundation for the software is working well. Assuming this feature works, I suspect it will be easy to start adding more advanced support structure editing capabilities.

The developers do constantly review features requests on this forum, so if you'd like to see tree supports in the next release, make sure to vote for that on the Feature Requests subforum!
