Model Coordinates

Do coordinates mean noithing in S3D!!?? I literally export two identical models that live in the exact same place and they import in two totally different locations in S3D.

How is this even possible? I find it hard to believe that autocad would attach arbitrary coordinates to an .stl during export.

It keeps getting harder and harder to stay a user of this software with issues like this.

Re: Model Coordinates

We haven't changed anything with how models import, so it should still be the exact same as all prior S3D versions.

If you import something like 5 files at once, the software will arrange them automatically so they aren't all sitting on top of each other. If you want to put them back to the exact coordinate system that you used in the CAD software, you can do that by selecting all of the models (Ctrl+A) then going to Edit > Align Selected Model Origins.

If you don't like the way it arranges the models you import, you can also modify that in your preferences by going to Tools > Options > Models tab, and disabling the "Arrange models after import" option.

Re: Model Coordinates

This was not due to loading multiple models at once.

I was testing import location consistency during live reloading as i had seen really screwy results. (See my other thread about live reloading that is not triggering consistently...sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't). Maddening in itself.

Method: I had two slightly different models right on top of one another in my cad program. i set the coordinates to world and exported the first model to the .STL file that was currently loaded in S3D. The live reloading triggered and it placed the model in a bizarre location relative to where it was. Strange in that I had not moved it from where it was in my cad package from when the original was in S3D. Why it did not line up like every other reload is beyond me. I noted the odd positioning.

I closed the factory file and reloaded it with a clean version. I then went back to my cad program and immediately exported the other slightly changed model to the same .STL file that lived at the exact same position. Coordinate system was identical for both models during export. The live reloading triggered again and it placed the model in a bizarre yet totally different location than the previous reload.

The question is...what is it about models living at the same locaiton...albeit with slightly different geometry...that makes S3D not place it per the actual coordinates present at export? Almost like something about the model itself is influencing the position result.

It is so haphazard that reloading is useless half of the time...assuming that it even works to begin with. I am left to rebuild the entire support structure over and over and over again.

Re: Model Coordinates

Ok, well if the issue is completely related to the live reload feature, then it's probably better to direct the conversation to your other thread:
