K2Plus and the CMS

I picked up a K2 Plus over the weekend and am looking forward to using S3D again. I requested and was sent the profile.

What I cannot figure out is how to set up the CMS and filaments. Is there a YouTube video on this or something?

For example: I have on my CMS:
Slot 1, Inland PLA
Slot 2, Black, ESun HS ABS
Slot 3, Red, MatchBox Slow speed ABS (Old filament)
Slot 4, Orange, Inland HS ABS

I would like to print a cube in ABS main color Orange then Red and Black stripes.

How would I do that?

Or more generally, I want print profiles to be separate from filament profiles. So when I want to print a cube with 20% infill, 3 walls, and no top or bottom. First print it in Red ABS then Orange PLA, then blue PETG. The print profile stays the same, just the filament changes. The print speed and cooling is adjusted with the filament.

Multi-material CMS/AMS/MMS I would think this is needed.

Ideas? Again videos would be good to explain.

Thanks

Re: K2Plus and the CMS

I believe most S3D profiles are already setup this way by default. There is an auto configure for material option, and when you change that option it adjusts all of your filament specific settings. So if you change that auto configure to PLA, it should load all of the PLA temperatures, fan speeds, etc. Do the PLA print, then change that option to select ABS for the next print if you want to change materials.

If you ever want to change which settings are adjusted based on the filament selection, just click the "..." button to the right of Save As New and choose Assign Settings to Categories. Then you can choose exactly which category affects each of your settings.

Re: K2Plus and the CMS

Thank you for the reply. I am missing something fundamental then.
when I open process there is one place to say PLA/PETG/ABS/etc.
When I click on the tab extruder I see slot 1 settings (Cool) but no where on the tab does it allow me to pick the type/brand of filament. That seems to be set at the material drop down above.

So again
Slot 1 may have Creality HS PLA with it's parameters
Slot 2 may have Inland Slow PLA with it's parameters
Slot 3 may have PETG for a barrier for supports (I do that a lot)

Also again, Can S3D please please post some updated videos showing how to use CMS. A picture is work 1000 word, videos are a lot of pictures.

Re: K2Plus and the CMS

The auto configure for material option at the very top of the process settings window will typically change the temperature for all your extruders to match that filament. For example, if you choose PLA it will setup all extruders so you can print using PLA. This is normal since printing something like PLA and ABS at the same time is generally not a good idea. It's also complicated because PLA and ABS generally want different fan speeds and bed temperatures. So I typically wouldn't recommend trying to print those at the same time.

If you wanted to configure a more advanced setup like PLA in extruders 1-3 and then PVA support material in extruder 4, then that can easily be done by just adding a new auto-configure material option called something like "PLA 1-3, PVA 4", then just set the temperature for each extruder as needed. That's pretty rare though, and from what I've seen people generally do their multi-color prints using the same material for all the extruders to make sure things stick together well.

Re: K2Plus and the CMS

I thank you for the reply.

First off, there is nothing easy about S3D for this kind of stuff. If you just want to print 1filament on one object, I love it. But this multi-matieral stuff gets very complicated, if you're not used to it.

my example, I emailed your support about it to, is a object with an over hang. The over hang need a little support. I ant to use PETG (similar printing requirements to PLA and does not stick hard to PLA)

I also have text I need to print in a different color.
I would like to setup 3-4 filament types (3-pla, 1 petg)
Assume PLA has also different printing requirements, 1 is High speed PLA (Print hotter) for example

I would like to:
  • Setup the filaments first then use them in a process.
Print the object in orange for example
print the embedded text in black ( the text is on a vertical wall so changing color by layer is not going to work)
print the interface between the support and object in PLA
I know S3D is afraid to post videos on YouTube, but is there a video showing how do do this with S3D.
I did it last night with orca. The setup took about 2 minutes. I also added strips

Re: K2Plus and the CMS

I setup prints like this a lot and it's really not hard once you know where to make the changes.

If you want to use 1-3 PLA and slot 4 as PETG, then you can just add a new material auto configure option for that setup and then change the values on the Temperature tab accordingly.

If you want to print the support interface with a particular slot, just go to the Support tab and change the dense support extruder only (the dense support is used for the interface). You may also need to increase the number of dense support layers to 1 or 2.

At that point your process should be setup correctly. You can copy and paste the process if you want to print a different object with different settings, then change the extruders as needed for different colors, supports, etc.
