For me, the issue comes from changes made in v4.1 where the behavior of the application of top solid layers (and I think bottom solid layers as well) was changed to address a reported error that I have no recollection of ever experiencing or reading about...which is not described in the release notes.

This resulted in the issue reported in viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11667 , to which I added some supporting information. If you read the thread, it references other threads with similar post v4.1 installation issues that appear to be related.

Further changes were made in v4.1.1 that appeared to revert the top layer processing back to somewhere near to how it worked in v4.0.1. But I have seen the occasional report....as in this thread....of the production of spurious bits of solid infill in places where solid infill shouldn't be produced.

To answer the question put to me....I would like this production of spurious infill investigated and addressed. I could have just said "Return the behaviour back to pre v4.1" but there must have been a genuine reason for making the changes in the first place....which seem to be "top secret". The changes introduced more than one undesirable differences in the program, one of was reported by users as a show-stopper and was resolved. I think any other side-effects now need resolving!

I can at least comment on my experience - it does seem too aggressive. The print that led to me creating this post was one of many I had done recently, and I see it happen on models where it seems unnecessary. I checked out that thread you linked, and while I can see its usefulness in situations such as that one, it seems like a less common use case.

I personally never had any complaints before this feature was introduced, but I also don't think I would have needed it too often. I do appreciate you responding to the thread!
Thank you for your input but it is difficult for me to tell how the feature is really working here with just this image to go off. Radruss, would you mind posting a Factory File for this?

To that matter, dkightley if you see any other situations with spurious infill as you describe it could you please post those so we could investigate further?

Well, I have this same question, but I think I have better pictures. Here is the entire part:
MaskPart.png
The first layer is fine, the second layer has the weird infil at the perimeter (in organge)
Layer2.png
But layer 3 is fine
Third_Layer.png
Looks like I can only do 3 images, so I will make another comment

Continuing....

On the fourth layer the strange layer infill near perimeter is seen again when the 20% infil starts
4th _layer.png
but its gone at the 5th layer

5th_Layer.png (108.92 KiB) Viewed 2561 times
Then it doesnt show up again until just before the first top layer. Where the arrow is pointing but also at the top of the image in yellow

I dont see a way to make it go away, its not needed for any of this. I tried 1, 2 and three perimeter layers. I tried a number of different setting and infils
