Re: Alternative to ABS

I had good luck with the way pet looks also, but it is slow, expensive, and more brittle.

Re: Alternative to ABS

I'm been doing the 3D print thing since January, and a little over a month ago I set out to up my ABS game. I had just about decided that ABS just wasn't worth the trouble, but I'm now getting excellent results and have switched to ABS for the bulk of the parts I'm printing.

My build surface is 1/4" MIC6 Aluminum laminated with 1/16" PEI. I give the PEI a light coat of ABS slurry and run the bed temp at 100C. My printer is a Makergear M2 and I've dialed in the settings so I get very nice surface finish, good builds on top of support, and support that breaks away easily. I rarely get any lift at all from the built surface, and have also built pretty large areas on top of support without any warp. Dimensional accuracy is good and no delamination even on thin-wall shells.

I'm running Hatchbox filament and the printer has a .35mm nozzle. I've found a nozzle temp of 245C and a layer thickness of .175mm gives the best results for models with support - one layer of separation top and bottom. I run the speeds for outlines and solid infills down around 1000 mm/min for best appearances. I also run outlines inside->out so startup blobs are hidden inside the part.

I also like PETG, but it's a lot more elastic than the ABS, so when I need high rigidity ABS is a better choice.

Re: Alternative to ABS

I have been using PET+ from MadeSolid and have been successful with it. Printing temperatures (hotend) are similar to ABS but bed temperatures are much lower. In fact it sticks very strongly to my PEI surface so curling is not an issue. The clear PET+ is working well for one big project I have.
