Ok, answering my own question ;-) ... I bought & installed Simplify3D and found that I could select this strategy with the "Print islands sequentially without optimization" option - nice!

This was implemented a few versions ago in the standard island logic. Printing Islands Sequentially is more relevant for the order in which entire layers of islands will be printed. Optimized can be thought of like a snake auction draft (Fantasy Football) and sequentially would be more like looping 012345, layer change, 012345, repeat...

Well thanks for the info... I found out in the meantime that the "islands sequentially" in fact doesn't do what I imagined, that is to print the perimeters (better still: outlines) of all islands first, then the remaining perimeters (if any) of all islands, and finally the infill of all islands. This is exactly what I observed to be the strategy of the MakerBot slicer (a quite recent version). There may be other factors too, but I found this strategy to produce *exceptional* results for small parts with many islands on an old Replicator 2.

Alas, I didn't find this strategy implemented in any other slicer. Wouldn't this be a worthwhile feature for Simplify3D, too?
