Supports in the air..

Am I doing something wrong or is this just a bug.

Settings to produce this:
A) have a model that has support structures in the middle instead of on the ground
B) enable option to extend supports outside the model a bit
C) Yeah, air support!

It seems to me S3D should be smart enough to know to extend that support structure down to the ground.

I just imported your factory file, clicked the add support. Did the basic 4 mm/ 45 degrees overhang settings and it worked. One thing to note, is that if your not very familiar with 3D modeling, from certain angles it could give the illusion that it's not touching the ground.

Did you click prepare to print on that?

I see exactly what your screenshot shows before prepare to print. After preparing I see the supports in air.

And it's not a 3d modeling visual issue... I printed the object and watched my support filament being extruded onto nothing.

I can change it to not print in air if I reduce the extra support distance back to 0 so they don't stick out. That isn't a good workaround though... sometimes I need the extra support distance.

Sliced it and found what you were saying, there were supports sticking over the edge. However, all you have to do is manually remove the outer ends of the supports and then reslice.

So this can sort of work depending on the part, but try it on something that has a hole without an opening on the other side. There just isn't a way to remove the supports on the inside that I can see. Plus it's annoying seems like you shouldn't have to worry about it. Hopefully can be fixed at some point.
