TAZ 4 Issue

Greetings,

New user here, to both Simplify 3D and the TAZ 4 (my first 3D Printer).

Yesterday I downloaded a file from Thingiverse, ran it through Simplify3D using the default settings for the TAZ3 (the TAZ 4 isn't listed in the software). I manually preheated the machine, copied the gcode to an SD card and printed from the TAZ 4 and it worked perfectly.

Today I'm doing the same process on a custom designed 3D part for my CNC machine. Everything is the same, it creates the gcode, gives me a price and time estimate, and it all appears to be fine. I copy it to the SD card, put it in the machine, preheat, and it won't print.

I've tried manually preheating to ABS, and homing the table, both work fine, but when I tell it to print the file it says "Bed Heating". It stays that way for a good 15+ minutes and never prints. I went back into Simplify 3D and created a new file, this time turning off "wait for temperate controller to stabilize....", but I get the same results.

If I turn on the machine from cold and just tell it to print the file, it will start heating the bed, but it doesn't heat the extruder. Once the bed gets to 85 degrees (90 if I use the software defaults), it just sits there saying "Bed Heating".

I tried loading some of the files from the SD card that came with the machine and they print fine. The included also set the extruder and bed to the proper temperature automatically when I start the print (though it starts printing before the machine is preheated).

I've tried Extruder Tool 0 (default) and Tool 1 thinking I might have changed something on accident, with no changes. I haven't hooked up the computer to the machine to try to print from Simplify 3D yet as this isn't typically how I intend to use the machine, but that will be my next step.

As an aside, I just tried re-printing the part I printed yesterday that worked fine, and I have to manually preheat the machine to ABS. If I try to load the file to print, it only heats the bed, not the extruder.

Any advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: TAZ 4 Issue

I am having a very similar issue with my Taz 4. The only difference I have is that I'm printing over USB. But it never gets past pre-heating.

Re: TAZ 4 Issue

Its an issue in the Bed PID values in the TAZ from what I can tell. We have a bunch of them at work and they all do it. I think it could be fixed by tuning the PID but the easy way is to back off the temp a degree or two in the control menu.

Re: TAZ 4 Issue

Just purchased the software and tried to print a file and the same thing happened. Preheated bed not nozzle and when preheated nothing. I am a newbie with a Taz 4. Can someone spell out for me some things to try? Thanks!!

Re: TAZ 4 Issue

I think the OP has a different issue. I found that printing off the TAZ by SD card you can't have long file names or spaces so if your file is "Toy ready to print.gcode) you need to change it to something like "Toy_ready_to_print.gcode).

The other issue (confirmed by Lulzbot) is that the bed set to say 85c will only get to 84c, that's plenty hot to print but 1c off the trigger value.

A workaround is to go into "Edit Process Settings" and click on "Show Advanced" if it's not already showing them, then go to temperature and select the "Heated Bed" in the left part, then uncheck "Wait for temperature controller to stabilize before beginning build". This means the build will start as soon as the hotend reaches temperature.

Re: TAZ 4 Issue

Same issue here. Just got a TAZ and all of my prints using slic3r went fine. But when I try to use S3D it just hangs at bed heating. I notice in the communication log it shows the bed temp as 89.6, while the LCD on the TAZ says 90. I'm assuming the TAZ rounds up for the LCD. My workaround has been to manually tell the bed to heat to 91c in the machine control panel before I want to print. Then it will get to 90.6 or so. Then I tell it to print and it starts.

What is the real solution to this issue? I haven't tried disabling the wait for temp to stabilize option but someone above said that didn't solve it for them.

Re: TAZ 4 Issue

I was having this problem even in other slicers. But I have solved this on my TAZ 4 in those slicers and Simplify3d by adding the following GCODE (found on lulzbot forums) to the start script

M304 P162 I17 D378 ; PID adjustment to help reach <BEDTEMP> more reliably

hope it's helpful.

Re: TAZ 4 Issue

Try doing the command in the machine control panel (communication tab) and then send in an M500 after, this will save the new values to the EEPROM so that you don't have to keep it in the starting script and the PID values should be stored
