Trouble Slicing Text

Hi there,

First of all I would like say hello to everyone as this is my first post. :)

Secondly, I have been having difficulty slicing text in Simpify3D v2.1.2.

The object is a simple 1mm thick rectangle with some text extruded to 1mm height. The object was modelled in Solidworks 2014 and then exported to .STL but when sliced in Simplify3D, the GCode visualiser does not show any of the necessary text.

The printer I am using is a FlashForge Creator Pro (less than one week old). I have always sliced the object in MakerBot Desktop and the text sliced almost perfectly in there (except X's and K's do not slice correctly..)

I am wondering if anyone can assist in getting the file to slice correctly.

Layer Height: 0.1mm
X/Y speed: 3,600 mm/s
Z speed: 5,400 mm/s

I hope this helps..

Kindest regards,

Nathan

Re: Trouble Slicing Text

ok, yes this is a simple one. the text is too thin. you need to remember that with only 1 perimeter for something like this that the extruder will make 2 passes. 1 wall on each side of the text so if your extrusion width is set to .4 then the thinnest thing your printer can print in this situation is .8mm the text is thinner than that and s3d knows these features cant be printed by your printer. this needs to be made with a more bold font. also another thing to keep in mind, looking at your settings is that you have a .4 nozzle but this doesnt mean you extrude at .4mm. there is alwasy a little die swell to take into account. if you notice when you change your ext width to auto it bounces up to .48mm. this is more correct. you can bring it down a bit but you usually always want your width to be slightly wider than your nozzle.

As Jimc said the text is just too thin. You can choose a different font, or just increase this font. If you scale the part up to 1.15, it slices fine. It looks like this is a phone-case or something though so that's not an option, but if you just make the text slightly bigger and try reslicing I'm sure you'll get some better luck.

Also: IMPACT bold is a great font for things like this. Since the letters are much thicker, they work better for printing versus a thin font like Arial.
