New Don Foley Model (for free)

I did this as an illustration for Popular Science last month. I didn't think it was running till November, so I haven't published it.

I began working on my write-up tonight and I found they have already (almost) published it. The online article is there with a "3D print model to come" placeholder.

Yikes. I've been out in the field on assignment for the past month and they knew it...I just didn't know they were waiting on me! I could/should have published this 3 weeks ago.

So here it is, since it'll be published tomorrow, I'm guessing.

I printed this on my new Duplicator 4S printer. Twice. No problems at all, which is kind of amazing since it is very complex on the paddles.

I used Simplify3D to set it up, like I do every model. Bed prep is the same as I always do, Scotch brand painter tape, wiped down with alcohol. First layer goes down at 25% speed with a brim. This allows me to tweak the bed while it lays down the first layer.

I did do something different this time, I bought an acrylic (or something like that) bed. I have shattered/chipped enough glass from my impatience that I wanted to try this out. It worked great. I will eventually replace all my beds (I have 4 printers, 3 use glass) with this.

And a big THANK YOU to the people buying my online models. I'm hoping to have time to release a mask model for Halloween.

Have fun!

Don

I love seeing those print beds maxed out. And all the artwork leading up to the end result.
Well done stuff :)

Thanks all!

I love my job. I've been doing 3D work for decades, and to have the ability for someone else to actually PRINT in their house what I created...that's too cool.

Looking forward to the days when the 3D printer next to my desk is as easy to use as the inkjet printer next to my desk.

I worked with Adobe to get Postscript working right (back in the 80's) for printers. I feel EXACTLY the same right now.

Then again, we got laserwriters working great...and then inkjet took over. There's a lesson there, somewhere.

My gators suck.

If you are printing at .01mm and .02mm resolution, you might have the most accurate printer in the entire world.

I am guessing you meant .1mm and .2mm.

Still very cool!

Of course. I mean to type 0.1mm and then mix it up.

Ah, Dyscalculia, my old pal.
