Is support structure always rectangular?

I ran into a problem where the layer in the mid-air is circular but since the support structure seems to be always rectangular about 3 layers are messing up the print. I think I can solve it using the "Extra Inflation Distance" but that means support is generated with that much extra for the entire print which seems like a waste of material. Are there any other parameters that can be tweaked to make the support structure work properly?

The model I am trying is http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:312656 (pick the file without support) and you would notice that the hip joint has the problem.

Re: Is support structure always rectangular?

support doesnt shoot off on angles if thats what you mean.....sort of like a tree type structure (meshmixer style). its always pillars from the bottom of the print. you can make the support low density, say 20% then choose the top "x" layers and make them higher density like 50%-75% to save material.
